USMC Marine Corp: Americas army

America's army is a multiplayer first-person shooter computer game based on the Unreal Warfare/Unreal II game engine. The U. S. Army released this game to aid public relations and recruitment. America's Army is the first instance of overt state use of computer gaming for political aims.

America’s Army is available for free download at US Army recruiting centers. It has sparked off debate, as tax dollars are going into the game this way. A survey by ‘I for I Research’ has revealed that 30% of the young people having a positive view of the military have developed that view by playing the game. At present, it is one of the five most popular online PC action games. It has more than 2 million registered players.

With a focus on realism, Americas Army falls into the subgenre of tactical shooter. Two teams fight against each other in this game. But a very interesting technological feature is that, each team view themselves as American troops carrying American weaponry, and the opposing team as non-uniformed OPFOR (OPposing FORces) carrying Eastern bloc weapons. The game currently offers 21 maps of various locations in varied size, objectives and weaponry. The locations range from snow-covered mountains to middle-eastern desert ruins.

To prevent cheating, America’s Army uses PunkBuster, the anti-cheat software. Due to updates, some people fail to play this game. GUID banning or hardware banning makes it necessary to replace the hardware to play the game again.

There are a number of clans, where the gamers play America’s Army with their clan identity. A clan is a group of online gamers who come together for simple fellowship. They may compete against other clans. Some clans spend a lot of money for a "leased server" to gain popularity by playing games there. Most of the clans maintain their own website. However, these sites hardy offer anything useful for the surfers.

America’s Army is a highly popular computer action game today. However, the features like loss of datagram due to the UDP connection, pseudorandom appearances like "fix-jams" etc. prevent a fair competition here.
