USMC Marine Corp: Army Ranks
Army ranks follow the system of grading officers as per seniority
and command in the military organizations. The Army rank is
essentially a badge of leadership. Pay
scale has no bearing in Army Ranks.
The Geneva Conventions segregates the Army ranks into “officers’,
“non-commissioned officers” and “men”. The Army rank
of commissioned officer includes-
1. Flag Officers are the Generals who command units independently for long periods
(brigades and larger).
2. Field Grade Officers command units independently for short periods (battalions
and regiments).
3. Company Grade or Junior Officers form the lower rank of officers. They do
not have independent operation. These are captains and officers lower in the
cadre who lead companies and other smaller units.
4. Warrant Officers are officers with technical skills and do not serve any
command positions.
The Army ranks of Non-Commissioned Officers are enlisted personnel with specific
administrative responsibilities. In fact, this Army rank is below the cadre
of junior commissioned officer. However, the responsibilities are much more
than that of the junior commissioned officers. This rank includes Sergeants.
Specialists and private soldiers form the other category. Staff officers have
charges of planning, training, logistics, supply and pay amongst others.
The army recruits officers for Army rank as commissioned officers as reserve
officers from-
1. The US
Military Academy at West Point, New York,
2. Other military academies of the United States,
3. Enlisted soldiers or graduates from Officer Candidate School,
4. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps College graduates,
5. Direct commission of lawyers, doctors, nurses and veterinarians,
6. Battlefield commissions for valor and leadership.
When they attain the Army rank of a Major, the President appoints them into
the Regular Army with the consent of the Senate. Commissioned officers initially
start in a particular branch of service on completion of which they become Brigadier
Generals. On attaining the rank of Brigadier Generals, they can command soldiers
of all branches. Warrant Officers come from the US Army Warrant Officer Candidate
School at Fort Rucker, Alabama.
